About Geardos
ScottyP
Geardos (rhymes with weirdo’s) is my attempt to provide relatively unbiased reviews of the various pieces of audio gear I have owned or used, as well as other information on music production and recording. I have always appreciated reading a good review of gear I was planning on buying, whether it swayed me to buy the equipment or helped me steer clear. I have also always appreciated a good article on sound production, whether I found the information useful or not. I think there is a big market for budget audio gear these days, especially with the advent of podcasting and the increased popularity of easy-to-use recording programs such as Garageband. All too often though, I have discovered that when I search online to find reviews of audio equipment, most of the sites that show up in the search results are stores with user submitted reviews, and I don’t see the logic in a store selling a product that has a lot of bad reviews, so I tend not to trust them much. When it comes to production and recording tips, there is a wealth of information available already, but I want to offer my own take and inject a bit of my own personality into my articles. Most importantly, it all has to be FREE! Because we all know that fancy glossy music mags are too expensive for starving musicians!
I strongly believe in the DIY (Do It Yourself) mentality of working. The artists who create music in their own small studios will always have more creative power compared to the bigwigs who work in fancy expensive studios, but who are forced to appeal to the mass public and submit to their respective labels. My goal is to provide a site that provides information on cheaper gear that most people can afford. I feel that there are a lot of great aspiring musicians out there who have little money and need to know exactly where to spend what they do have to get the most out of their art form. Whether you are working minimum wage jobs or stretching the limits of your student loan, or if you like to pinch pennies for no good reason, Geardos is here for you. Remember: Be creative, Be independent, and Be weird. DIY.

Hi Scotty,
I discovered your site after reading the ‘post your blog’ thread on the Steve Pavlina forums. Nice site, and a great idea starting that discussion.
Have you by any chance tried the Supra Cables? Specifically the Supra Bi-Line, which lets you plug an iPod directly into a stereo (or anything with an RCA jack).
cheers,
Scott

Hi Scott, 1/8 inch to stereo RCA cables are very common and can be found at most stores with audio/visual departments. I use them all the time and they work fine. You don’t need to spend a lot though, the generic ones usually do the job just as well as the fancy ones.

i watched the oxygen 8 review on youtube. i thought you were gonna get more in depth with the review. it would be nice to see someone use it in production with controlling midi modules. i have a mpc 2000, roland jv1010, korg n364, emu planet phatt and proteus1. and i have been trying to controll my modules through my mp or oxy8. can you do something on there to help us poor producers into stardom?

Hey Scotty, Very cool site. I found it by searching “zoom h4″ on youtube. Your review was the first in line, so I went with it. Excellent review with very informative comments, pro and con. I think I will buy it. My band chums and I have always pined for the days when you could throw a leather jacket over a blaster and hit record. Since those days were over 20 years ago I guess it’s time up-graded to 2008. We have been using a Roland 1680 since the late 90′s when it was a cool machine, however although it’s portable (sort of) it doesn’t have the point and click capability that we crave for recording our latest jams and stoned out grandiose operettas. I will definatley hit Ctrl+D!

Hi Scotty,
I just bought an Oxygen 8v2 and am using it on a windows xpcomouter. I am getting no sound using the Ableton Lite Live 6 with volumes turned up. I have selected Oxygen 8 in the Control Panel. Iam having so much trouble. Can you help me> I am so frustrated that I feel like taking it back to the store.
